Oil Shear Technology - No Adjustment No Maintenance

Designed with Oil Shear Technology the MagnaShear Motor Brakes typically mount to the back of a brake motor. They are designed to be a stopping brake, not just a holding brake.

Oil Shear Technology, perfected over 50 years by Force Control Industries, allows the brake to dynamically slip to a stop without wearing friction material, and the fluid circulating through the brake friction stack transfers the heat of engagement to the housing to be cooled. This allows the brake to operate at a consistant torque for many years without adjustment, or maintenance.

They can survive the harsh environments of mining, manufacturing, material handling as well as packaging and food processing with minimal maintenance and no adjustment. The totally enclosed rugged housings keep dirt and moisture out while reducing noise and extracting heat.

Dry friction brakes are typically designed as holding brakes. Using them for dynamic stopping wears friction material away causing constant adjustment and frequent replacement of discs, pads, or shoes.

Options and Accessories

  • Manual Release – Designed to allow manual release of the brake when power is off. This allows movement of the machine for maintenance purposes while the power is locked out. 
  • Manual Release Indicator – indicates that the brake has been manually released
  • Wear Indicator Sensor – Indicates when the brake has reached maximum friction disc wear
  • Stub shaft – shaft extended out the back of the brake for  encoder mounting
  • Splined Quill – splined quill for connecting to special splined motor or reducer shaft.
  • Voltage Step down Transformers – required if brake control power is not 115 VAC. Many voltages can be used such as 240, 480, 390, 575, and DC.
  • Marine Duty – Similar to washdown this option is for use on boats, barges offshore rigs, or waterfront loading facilities and ports exposed to fresh or salt water.
    • All of the items  included in the washdown option are included as well as bio degradable fluid.
  • Washdown - All units an be furnished with food grade fluid USDA-H2 for applications where standard fluid may be objectionable. This could be in food processing, or around water.

Manual Release IndicatorMagnaShear Release Indicator – indicates that the brake has been manually released. This is used as a safety precaution to indicate when the brake is no longer holding the load.

Oil Shear Technology - When Reliability is Important

Splined QuillMagnaShear 

Splined Quill – Especially when doing a retrofit on a crane a splined shaft is often used and requires a splined quill. Force Control Industries can make splined quills with a drawing or by making a mold of the existing spline.

 

Stub shaftMagnaShear Stub 

Shaft – There are times when an encoder is required especially with VFD drives. The optional shaft extension out the back of the brake is ideal for mounting an encoder.
